How To Guarantee The Best Hires



Have you ever considered the difference between seeing your team members as an investment or as a cost?

One of the most common obstacles I notice in coaching entrepreneurs is the clash in relationships with their employees. For many, a good hire is someone who shows up on time, does an average job, doesn’t take too many sick days, and doesn’t leave too early in the day.

The only problem with this approach is that it’s a very empty way of viewing both your entrepreneurial team and your company.

Hire team members not employees.

One of the first distinctions we made at Strategic Coach was that anyone hired to work with the company was a team member—not an employee.

This is important because some people aren’t good at teamwork. There are people who enjoy simply showing up to work every day and don’t want to have to think beyond doing their own job, or work beyond their job description. I like to refer to them as “rugged individualists.”

In some environments, there’s nothing wrong with this, but they’re just not the right fit for Strategic Coach. This attitude doesn’t typically coincide with growth.

We look to hire people who parallel our beliefs that we should always be growing. The reason for this is our goal is be bigger and better every year, so we need team members who are aiming to do the same. There is no amount of money, time or training that can compare to the returns an engaged team member can provide.

If you think if your team members not just as individuals but as all playing they’re particular role in a team – where they’re working within their unique abilities and combining it with other’s unique abilities – everybody comes to work feeling incredibly engaged with the entire process of teamwork.

Team members will start to take on a sense of “flow,” which is this wonderful teamwork that has very positive chemical effects inside the brain and body.

Investing in your team will provide huge returns.

By investing in your team, it is a guarantee that teamwork will only continue to grow and progress. The level of engagement will also be incredibly high for everyone in the company, because when individuals are really valued and rewarded for what they do uniquely well it can be one of the greatest experiences in their lives.

Strategic Coach started with only three people who made up the entire team. Now we have over a hundred team members worldwide, and we’re getting a thousand times more return now than we did in the 1980s.

If your mindset for hiring is to look for investments that have a bigger return, it is impossible to go wrong. Give up the idea of employees and costs, and start looking for great team players.

You may just end up with a group of individuals who look forward to coming into work on Monday.
