Originally, the word “game changer” came from the sports world and referred to a moment in the game when one team’s energy shifted, and along with it the outcome of the game. Sports commentators called this moment, this particular play, a game changer.

In the 1980s, with the introduction of the personal computer, suddenly small and medium-sized businesses had the computing power that was previously only possible for large corporations and government organizations.

Along with this shift, the sports term game changer seemed the perfect word to describe what was now possible in the business world. We saw it first with the personal computer; then with the Internet, the ultimate game changer; and again with the multi-functional smart phone.

The game changer behind the game changer.

It’s interesting that even though a game changer is generally talked about in terms of technology, what you’ll find if you dig deeper is an entrepreneur who actually took that technology and used it to change the game.

The greatest game changers on the planet today are entrepreneurs. Think of the legendary cultural heroes in the entrepreneurial world, like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerburg, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos, who are game changers of the highest order.

So even though the general public sees technology as the game changer, the game changed only because an entrepreneur had the vision, the willingness to create something that didn’t yet exist, and the tremendous courage to take a risk — and, oftentimes, there was enormous failure before these entrepreneurs experienced their remarkable success.

Start off with a game-changer mindset.

My advice to any entrepreneur — and this is what we teach in the Strategic Coach® Program — is to start their career with the mindset that they will be a game changer in some way. From the very start, rather than focusing on a money goal or a status goal, their focus would be to innovate.

Your game changer might be a brand new idea, a new process, or a new structure that takes advantage of new kinds of technology. It doesn’t have to be big to begin with. It just has to allow your clients or customers to think differently about their progress, something that helps them achieve much bigger and better results than anything else that currently exists.

I find that the most successful entrepreneurs seldom have financial goals as their overriding reason for being in business. Their goal is to create something unique that makes a huge difference in the lives of their customers and clients, and then expands far beyond this as it becomes known.

Renewed energy for your wide-open future.

If you’re bogged down, feeling like you’re really stuck, or bored with what you’re doing, my suggestion would be to adopt a game-changer mindset. Make it your goal to multiply value for your customers. Create something new that’s based on all your experience and skill that immediately makes them more productive, profitable, and prosperous.

I’m constantly on the lookout for game changers, and in my world, they show up in the form of entrepreneurs with exciting new ways of approaching their marketplaces. I’d like you to always be alert to game changers around you, and then see where you can introduce something new, entirely different, and hugely valuable to the lives of your customers and clients.

You’ll notice that all the energy you’ve been missing because you’ve been thinking in conventional ways will be renewed exponentially, and you’ll have an entirely new enthusiasm about your suddenly wide-open future.
